I found this book to be too jumbled up. I think the idea was good but it just didn't flow smoothly. Characters were referred to by their first name and then later on by their last name and it kept switching back and forth. The author also would write the thoughts going through Sydney's head as she spoke, (which is fine used in moderation but a bit taxing when it is a constant.) I finished feeling like I had just watched a very long ping pong game. I think with some good editing this book could have been really good. Also at the end, all the loose ends were pretty much just summed up in a couple of paragraphs. I didn't hate it and I have read worse but I can't say I would rush to find another by this author.Product details

The Protector Sydney Valentine Mystery Book 1 edition by Danielle Lenee Davis Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews
The Protector is well written, has a strong female protagonist, keeps you trying to put the (Scrabble) pieces together, and has a twist at the end. When reading a mystery, those are all things that I enjoy.
What I would like to see is more in depth character development. As the series continues, perhaps that will evolve. I will definitely be reading the next book.
I liked the plot and the characters, especially the lead cop in this story of murder and assault. It seemed a little slow at times but it probably was true to life in how a police investigation would be and not because of this author's writing skills. The story flowed well and was descriptive enough that you understood who was who. All together, I liked it. 👍
This is the beginning to a new series and I think it started off very well! Loved the main character, Sydney Valentine, as she is smart, funny and feisty. Love the banter between her and her partner. Really good storyline that kept you guessing until the end. Looking forward to reading more of this series.
I received a free copy of this book and voluntarily chose to review it.
I didn’t really like any of the characters. They were shallow and I figured out what was going on at the very beginning. The dialogue was repetitive and stilted. I think the characters could have used a lot more depth, I kept getting them mixed up because there weren’t many defining characteristics for any of them. I got through it. It could have been a better story, recycled idea done badly.
The story was well written with good character development. I was kept guessing until almost the very end. Dialogue seemed natural. There were very few typos or other errors, EXCEPT at about 82%, there were a whole bunch of pages repeated from back toward the beginning of the book. That completely threw me off when I was really into the story, and that's why I gave the book 4 stars instead of 5. Still, it's a good story, and I would definitely recommend this book.
A wonderful mystery by author Danielle Lenee Davis. Detective Sydney Valentine is a dedicated homicide detective dealing with the puzzling murder of a social worker. The killer is placing scrabble tiles at each following murder scene leaving Sydney and her partner searching for how this connects the murders. The killer then begins going after Sydney trying to stop her from investigating. This mystery has all that a mystery lover could ask for – great story, great developed characters (with a touch of humor between Sydney & her partner), and a mystery that will keep you guessing until the last chapter. Sydney Valentine is the kind of cop that you would want working for you with a “don’t give up” attitude and “do what you need to do” to solve the crime. A great story and I can’t wait to read the next book in the series. (by paytonpuppy)
As the first of what will apparently be a series about Sydney Valentine, a Southern California detective, it opens the door to her world. The only problem is that much of the book lacks depth, in favor of a wide spread of characters.
On the one hand we're plopped into her life and latest case, so we get pictures of things already in progress. her relationship with her partner, for instance. They banter but he's doing mysterious things. She has a twin sister with husband and son - apparently to contrast with her lonely cop life of all work and no romance (just a whiff of trite there). The case she's on has multiple murders but ultimately isn't a serial killer.
Not bad, but I didn't do ish with the "wow, I need to read more about her" that I had with the heroines of MZ Kelly or Toby Neal. Here's hoping Sydney Valentine turns into a memorable character at some point.
